Las bravatas trasatlánticas
Teresa Hernández is a Puerto Rican transdisciplinary artist (performance, theater, dance, video) with over thirty years of experience as a creator, researcher, producer and director. Working under the name Producciones Teresa, no inc., she has developed an independent solo practice that challenges the art market through small-scale, unincorporated work.
Her pieces – more than fifty to date, presented in Puerto Rico and internationally – draw from the body in continuous movement, engaging with colonialism, patriarchy, capitalism, ecological deterioration and nature’s transformative resistance.
Her work has been recognized by institutions including Sally Van Lier Foundation (1993); Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña (1994, 2020), USA Foundation (Rolón Fellow 2011), Art Matters Foundation (2018), Beta Local (2017–2020), PRAI (2020–2022; 2026) and Beca Letras Boricuas (2025).
For her residency project with CoastARTS, Las bravatas trasatlánticas, Teresa builds on her ongoing performance research platform Bravatas: sal, sargazo y cansancio (launched in 2018), which weaves together coastal life, tidal surges, erosion, environmental collapse, tourism and colonial survival in the Puerto Rican archipelago. The word bravatas – carrying connotations of warning, threat and defiance – serves as her guiding concept for examining the damage of neoliberal policies on land and environment.
During her time in Asturias, she will transplant these themes to the Cantabrian coast, using walking, community dialogue and collaboration with ecologically engaged artists as the foundation for new performative-visual research. Documentation itself will function as aesthetic material. The work will unfold both inside and outside LABoral, requiring technical support and physical space, as her practice is rooted in the present, moving body.
